The Women's Center works with faculty and staff to provide programming specifically geared to their professional development, taking into account gendered issues within the workplace, as well as social and celebratory opportunities, and curricular support and departmental training.
You are welcome to participate in all Women's Center programs, and not just those designated on this page. This page allows you to view those programs designed with you in mind, but all of our events are helpful in learning more about gendered issues. For example, many faculty and staff enjoy our AAUW Start Smart Salary Negotiation Workshop and International Women's Coffee Hours.
The Women's Center, under the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, provides an early career faculty and staff development program, entitled Women Leading OHIO. Despite the major strides towards equality women have made in the workplace and higher education, there still remains a confidence and leadership gap. This program, which lasts for a full academic year, is cohort based and includes workshops, guest speakers, networking and social opportunities to help early career faculty in their career development and transition to Athens, OH. Cost to participate in the program is $800.
Join the Women's Center, and the organizing committee, in honoring and celebrating the achievements of women at Ohio University. This Appreciation Dinner is an opportunity for us to highlight the successes of women in a variety of roles, and to lift up those doing work in areas that may go unrecognized as "women's work" or more feminized labor. These awards are meant to honor women on campus, broadly defined.
We encourage faculty to utilize Women's Center programming to assist in outside classroom learning opportunities for their students. In order to help faculty seamlessly incorporate our programs into their syllabus, we have prepared a co-curricular guide to bridge the gap between academic units and the Women's Center. This guide has detailed information about our events, areas of study each program would complement, projected learning outcomes, potential discussion questions, as well as recommended readings and in-class activities.
We're happy to work with you to provide training that works within our mission, and have done successful trainings on diversity and inclusion in higher education as well as being an ally. Gender Equity in Higher Education
Topic: The objectives for this program are as follows: strengthen one's understanding of gender bias within higher education; identify obstacles that can be a detriment to women?s successes; determine the impact that inequity has on students within departments; understand our roles in building an inclusive environment; invest in decreasing gender bias within the workplace and classrooms; access additional resources like Equal Opportunity and Educational Opportunity at OHIO for information about legal responsibilities, information for reporting, and continuing education.
A two semester-long program, mentees (undergraduate students) are paired with a female mentor in their personal and professional fields of interest during the Fall semester. Mentors and mentees decide on the format of their mentoring relationship and the time commitment they wish to make. In addition to building a mentoring relationship, participating students and mentors have the opportunity to attend programs and activities focused on career and personal development. Interested mentors and mentees should apply in the Spring semester prior to the year that they would like to participate. This program requires a commitment of a full academic year.
