Eligibility

You may qualify for TRIO SSS if you are an incoming or currently enrolled OHIO student AND meet at least one of these:

First-Generation

You are first-generation if neither of your parents earned a bachelor's (four-year) degree.

You still qualify as first-generation even if your parents attended some college, earned an associate degree, or completed college in another country.

  • If you have a legal guardian other than your parents, you may also be considered first-generation.

Low-income

TRIO uses federal income guidelines based on family size and income to determine income eligibility.

If you are unsure if your family qualifies as "low-income", apply to TRIO, and we'll help you determine your eligibility.

Student with a disability

All students with documented disabilities are eligible to participate in TRIO. This includes learning, mental health, physical, chronic health, and sensory disabilities.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, apply to TRIO, and let us help you determine your eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a GPA requirement to participate?

No. TRIO welcomes students at every academic level, and there's no GPA requirement.

  • Struggling academically? We're here to help you succeed with tutoring, study strategies, and personalized coaching.
  • Already excelling? We offer graduate school preparation, competitive internship guidance, leadership development, and career planning to help you reach your goals.

Wherever you are academically, TRIO meets you there and supports your growth.

Can transfer students apply?

Yes. We encourage transfer students and students relocating from Ohio University regional campuses to apply!

Can I join TRIO if I'm a sophomore, junior, or senior?

Absolutely! We welcome students at any point in their college journey—whether you're just starting out or preparing for graduation.

I participated in another TRIO program. Can I still join TRIO at OHIO?

Yes! We specifically encourage students who have previously participated in TRIO programs to apply. If you were in TRIO during high school or at another institution, you already understand the value of these services—and we'd love to continue supporting you at Ohio University.

The eight federal TRIO programs are:

  • Upward Bound
  • Upward Bound Math-Science
  • Veterans Upward Bound
  • Talent Search
  • Student Support Services (that's us!)
  • Educational Opportunity Centers
  • Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program
  • TRIO Training Program for staff and leadership development

Is there a cost to participate in TRIO?

No. All TRIO services are completely free for participants. TRIO SSS is funded by a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Is TRIO the same as academic advising?

TRIO complements your academic advisor but offers more personalized, holistic support. While your academic advisor helps with course selection and degree requirements, TRIO provides ongoing mentorship, tutoring, career planning, financial literacy workshops, and a supportive community.
