Ohio Athletics names Peden Stadium Tower in honor of Coach Bill Hess
OHIO University Athletics has announced that the Tower at Peden Stadium has been named to honor of William “Bill” Hess, one of the most successful football coaches in OHIO history.
The newly named "Bill Hess Tower" also recognizes gifts from Mike Nugent ’75 and the Hess family. The Ohio University Board of Trustees approved a resolution to formally name the Tower during its August 2026 meeting in Dublin, Ohio.
“My sister Lauren Miller and I greatly appreciate the recognition that is being bestowed upon our father,” said Tom Hess, son of Bill Hess. “We want to thank the Board of Trustees, President Lori Gonzalez and Athletic Director Slade Larscheid for this dedication. ‘Big Daddy,’ as he was fondly known by his players, had two goals for his football program. First, the football team would be competitive and would play the game with integrity. Second, he hoped his players would use their football experience in shaping their future lives. We also want to thank the coaches and players who stood shoulder to shoulder during his 20 seasons as head football coach at Ohio University. Their commitment and dedication to his program represent the heart of this honor.”
Hess served as OHIO’s head football coach from 1958 to 1977, leading the Bobcats through one of the most successful periods in program history. During his 20 seasons, Hess won four Mid-American Conference championships and guided the Bobcats to two undefeated seasons, including the 1960 team that earned National Small College Championship recognition.
“Coach Hess and this storied era of OHIO football is truly deserving of being honored,” Larscheid said. “It's great to see this dedication come to fruition, and I look forward to recognizing and celebrating Bill's lasting legacy. Additionally, special thanks to Tom Hess, Lauren Hess Miller and Mike Nugent for their support with the dedication.”
Hess’ influence remains part of the foundation of OHIO Football. The Bill Hess Tower will permanently place his name above the field where he led some of the most accomplished teams in program history, creating a lasting connection between generations of Bobcats and one of OHIO Football's defining eras.
Contributions to the Bill Hess Tower build on the momentum of the Stand Up for OHIO Football initiative, launched through a leadership commitment from former OHIO quarterback Donny Harrison ’83. The initiative honors the program’s rich tradition while advancing continued investment in the future of OHIO Football.
The Bill Hess Tower will be unveiled Saturday, Oct. 10, on Homecoming Day.
