Updates to online proctoring: Lower costs, new software beginning July 1

Following a thorough review supported by faculty and staff from across Ohio University, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is announcing changes to online proctoring software offerings.

Proctorio will replace Proctortrack as the University's online proctoring software provider beginning July 1, 2026.

This change comes after a request for proposal (RFP) this spring to evaluate online proctoring solutions before Proctortrack’s contract ends July 1, 2026. The RFP committee of faculty and staff explored a variety of proctoring scenarios and engaged in significant discussion about the appropriate use of proctoring software, institutional support for assessment strategies, and sustainable funding models.

Proctortrack has been offered as a student- and department-paid solution, with the majority of costs paid by students at approximately $6 per exam. Switching to Proctorio will reduce this cost by half, to $3 per exam. Proctorio will use a student pay-per-exam model and is expected to offer improved digital accessibility.

Timeline

Through June 30, 2026

  • Proctortrack remains available for typical use and support

After June 30, 2026

  • Proctortrack is retired and no longer available for any exams
  • Proctorio is available in Canvas for use with any exam

Guidance for summer instructors

Instructors teaching during the second summer session or full summer term are encouraged to delay setting up proctored online exams until Proctorio becomes available in Canvas. This is expected later this month, and an announcement will be made in Canvas once it is available.

Additional testing options

While the online software offering is changing this summer, please note that Respondus LockDown Browser will remain available to all Canvas users. This tool is available because of a joint investment by OHIO Online and the Physical Therapy Department. Instructors may require the LockDown Browser for any Canvas quiz. Students can download and use the browser at no cost.

Proctoring considerations

Instructors are encouraged to reserve paid online proctoring through Proctorio for high-stakes exams to help minimize both financial burden and student anxiety. Please refer to guidance from the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost for additional recommendations on proctoring online assessments.

Support and consultation

Instructors seeking support in evaluating testing and proctoring options are encouraged to schedule a consultation with an OIT instructional technologist. These consultations can help align course goals with appropriate tools and assessment strategies. If you have additional questions, please contact the OIT Service Desk.
