Understanding the dangers of social engineering attacks

Social engineering tactics are often used by criminals who are trying to convince their victims to provide sensitive or personal information, such as bank account information.

In some cases, these tactics can also be used to try to persuade their victims into sending money or other resources. Social engineering can be acted out via email, text messages, and even via face-to-face interactions.

Ohio University’s Information Security Office has put together information to help students, faculty and staff better understand social engineering attacks. The information includes explanations of types of social engineering attacks, what to watch out for and what to do if you feel you are a victim of a social engineering attack.

All members of the OHIO community are encouraged to read through the resources in order to help them stay safe.
