Student teachers build confidence, community at OHIO Chillicothe

Ohio University Chillicothe senior Ava Eldridge is discovering what it takes to lead a classroom of energetic second graders during her professional teaching internship at Adena Elementary School. Eldridge, an early childhood and elementary education major, is gaining hands-on experience as she moves from observing to delivering daily instruction.

“These experiences have helped me feel more confident, organized and comfortable in my role as a teacher,” Eldridge said. “While I have substitute taught before, student teaching is a very different experience. I am planning lessons, present every day, and being observed in all aspects of my teaching.”

Outside her internship, Eldridge also develops teaching skills by instructing spin classes, where she practices planning, organization and flexibility, skills that translate directly to the classroom.

Senior Kylie Fink, a middle childhood education major, is completing her own professional internship at Southeastern Middle School. She said the experience has strengthened her lesson planning skills and given her a deeper understanding of what it means to lead a classroom.

“Student teaching is a learning experience, and I’m learning how to become a better teacher for when I have my own classroom,” Fink said.

Faculty say both students have grown significantly within their education cohort, where classroom discussions and collaboration help future teachers build confidence and community.

“Together we establish a climate of respect, care, creativity and curiosity that I hope they emulate in their future classroom,” said Dr. Amy Wolfe, associate professor of education.

Associate Professor of Instructor Karen Corcoran praised Fink for her leadership.

“Kylie’s attitude, constant smile and willingness to take on leadership roles make her an outstanding teacher candidate,” she said. “She is a joy and will be an asset to our profession.”

Wolfe said Eldridge “demonstrates commitment to her intended profession through engagement in class and clinical experiences.”

Both students are active in Kappa Delta Pi, the education honor society at OHIO Chillicothe, where Fink serves as president and Eldridge is vice president. The chapter hosts activities such as Trunk-or-Treat, group bowling, and induction ceremonies. Those events help members build relationships and leadership experience alongside their classroom training.

As they complete their internships, Eldridge and Fink say their experiences, from campus leadership roles to standing at the front of the classroom, have prepared them well for the day they lead their own classrooms.
