OHIO Online Career Services launching new AI tool during spring semester

This spring, OHIO Online Career Services is partnering with the Ohio University Alumni Association to launch a new AI tool that will revolutionize how students and alumni approach their job searches.

This free tool for OHIO Online students is a highly specialized career chatbot called Theo. With a little input from the user, Theo can customize resumes and cover letters, as well as suggest ideal job opportunities within minutes.

A superior AI model for job hunting

Theo was built by nSpire AI, a company that specializes in career support. Unlike ChatGPT and Gemini, it is uniquely designed to help users find and apply for jobs.

“The reason that we chose Theo is not only because it is career specific, but also because, for OHIO Online, most of our students are working professionals who need the best tools possible to either pivot their careers or help them advance in their career. After extensive testing, we believe that Theo is the best product available in the current market space,” explained OHIO Online Associate Director of Career Services and Engagement Elizabeth Guarino.

In addition to its highly specialized design, another benefit of using Theo is that users have total control over their data, unlike most publicly available AI chat models. According to nSpire AI, they are GDPR Compliant and SOC 2 Certified. GDPR is the EU’s leading privacy framework and global standard for data protection, while a SOC 2 Certification shows that they use the leading US security framework for protecting customer data. With these credentials, students and alumni can rest assured knowing that their sensitive job application data will be secure while using the tool.

Innovative, time-saving features

One of the defining features of Theo is its ability to customize resumes and cover letters. The only information the bot requires is the user’s desired job posting description and their original resume. Moments later, Theo will have enhanced the user’s documents and adapted the user’s skills as appropriate to match key words and descriptions needed to optimize their chances of landing an interview.

If there are any organization or formatting issues with the user’s original resume, the bot will also re-organize and re-format it. However, the users should still review their documents to ensure accuracy and adjust them as needed.

Once the documents are complete, Theo will do a job alignment assessment. This assessment lets the user know whether they are a good fit for the job they are applying for based on the user's current work qualifications. If there are any qualifications that they are lacking, Theo will let them know where those critical gaps are so that they can improve their chances of still getting an interview.

Lastly, Theo suggests new job openings that users may be ideal candidates for. For those that are familiar with LinkedIn Premium, this is a comparable system. Instead of having to pay a monthly premium, though, this feature is completely free for OHIO Online students and Ohio University alumni.

First-class interview and business conversation practice opportunities

For users who have already acquired an interview, Guarino mentioned that Theo offers mock interview practice opportunities.

According to nSpire AI, “Theo runs realistic conversations with follow up questions that sharpen how you explain ideas, structure answers, and respond under pressure.” If you are curious about what this process looks like, the company offers everyone a chance to have a 5 minute conversation with Theo, no account needed.

Other conversation simulation opportunities include elevator pitches, sales pitches and networking events practice. To mirror these real-life scenarios, Theo responds in real time to the user’s responses. After the practice session is over, the bot will provide in-depth feedback on how to improve the user’s content and delivery. These practice opportunities offer something for everyone -- whether they are veterans in their field or new to the job force.

One of many resources from Career Services

Theo is just one of many services that Career Services offers to OHIO Online students. The office is committed to providing resources that help students navigate every stage of their professional journey—from exploring career paths to preparing for the job market and advancing within their fields.

In addition to personalized career coaching, resume and interview support, and networking guidance, Career Services continually evaluates new technologies and strategies that can better support the unique needs of online learners.

“We are constantly looking for tools and resources that can help our students advance in their chosen careers, and this is a solution that is both practical and we believe innovative at this stage,” Guarino shared. By integrating tools like Theo alongside traditional career support services, OHIO Online aims to ensure that students have access to modern, effective resources that help them confidently pursue new opportunities and reach their professional goals.

For those interested in learning more about this new tool, Guarino is hosting a webinar titled "Meet Theo – OHIO’s Answer to AI-Assisted Job Search Made Easy," on April 8, at 7 p.m. EDT via Microsoft Teams.

Registration for the webinar is available now and is open to the public. There will also be virtual Theo clinics throughout the summer where students can ask questions.
