Wilson Hall wins campus recycling competition

Ohio University’s annual Recycling Battle Royale competition was a success.

The competition was between each residence hall and ran from Sept. 26 through Oct. 23. A combined total of 62,095 pounds of materials were recycled by all the residence halls over the 28 days of the competition.

The residence hall that was in the top spot fluctuated throughout the weeks. After weeks one and two, 4 University Terrace on East Green was in the lead. During weeks 3 and 4, Wilson Hall on West Green took the lead and held onto first place with a 36.1 percent recycling rate. Washington and Bush Halls on East Green finished in second place with a 35.5 percent recycling rate, and Ewing on South Green finished in third place with a 35.3 percent recycling rate. 

Throughout the competition, students had the opportunity to learn some of the details of recycling in southeast Ohio through the residence hall video boards as well as social media. Graphics taught what is and is not recyclable in the area and gave recycling tips like no plastic bags, food, or liquids in the recycling. 
 
When asked why recycling is meaningful to them, Ohio University business management technology student Dalton Neise said “Taking action gives you peace of mind. You’re doing something. You’re helping out. In a world full of bad, it’s good to be good sometimes.”

“It’s saving the world” added Niese’s friend and environmental studies major Blake Madden.

Campus Recycling and Zero Waste is now working with Residence Life to organize a free pizza party for the victorious Wilson Hall.
