When you choose to pursue this advanced public health degree, you will explore 14 online MPH courses in a curriculum focused on community public health. Develop your expertise in public health concepts, social and behavioral science, rural health disparities, chronic diseases, environmental health sciences, and more. You will earn a Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology without taking any additional courses. Complete 200 hours of hands-on practicum experience at an approved organization that has a mission focused on health outcomes in the community. This can include the place where you currently work. Then finish with a capstone project in which you apply what you’ve learned to a community setting.

HLTH 6710 Public Health Concepts

Definitions of public health, organizational structure, history, law, ethics, essential services, global programs, and future public health. The unifying theme is the health disparities of population groups.

HLTH 6720 Social and Behavioral Sciences in Public Health

This course teaches social and behavioral science concepts, diversity issues, theories of health education and promotion, applications to public health issues, and interventions in reference to communication, collaboration, and strategies.

HLTH 6001 Program Planning and Implementation in Rural Public Health

Program Planning and Implementation in Rural Public Health focuses on the skills needed to conduct a rural health needs assessment in order to determine priority health issues within rural communities. This course also includes how to plan and design a health-related intervention to address the health needs identified during the rural health needs assessment.

HLTH 6002 Program Evaluation in Rural Public Health

This course focuses on the fundamentals of health promotion program evaluation and research methods related to behavioral science and health education. The course emphasizes general evaluation and research methodology as applied to specific health program and health policy situations.

HLTH 6080 Health Policy

This course highlights the impact of health care public policy; including the health administrator’s role in policy analysis, development, interpretation, and implementation.

HLTH 6900 Special Topics

Special Topics in Public Health focuses on communication and leadership in public health and health organizations. In this class, you will use communication theory, organizational theory, management theory, public health case studies, and health organizational contexts to learn how teams, organizations, and cultures interact to support health. In this course, we will use systems theory to understand how social groups enable or constrain holistic health by exploring such topics as effective interprofessional teams, leadership, negotiation, mediation, conflict management, organizational change, and communicating audience-appropriate public health content.

HLTH 6140 Rural Health Disparities

Includes factors influencing health outcomes in rural areas of the United States. Focuses on examining the disparities of access and availability of public health services, medical services, and other health-related services, in rural undeserved populations. Other issues include examining how socioeconomic status, ethnicity, geographic location, and cultural factors affect health outcomes in rural areas as well as how to reduce the existing rural health disparities.

HLTH 6730 Epidemiology in Public Health

The course covers the fundamental epidemiological concepts, methods, and their practical applications. Health/disease status measurements, the principles of causality, and epidemiological study designs will be studied. Evaluation of risk factors and the effectiveness of interventions targeting them will be covered.

HLTH 6740 Biostatistics in Public Health

Principles of biostatistics in the context of multiple public health applications including basic and advanced statistical techniques for analyzing and investigating public health issues including disparities.

HLTH 6760 Environmental Health Sciences in Public Health

This course explores air/water quality, food hygiene, sanitation municipal/infectious/hazardous waste, vector-borne disease, occupational health, legal and risk issues, global issues, and other special topics.

HLTH 6770 Grant and Proposal Writing in Public Health

Methods and techniques for writing and managing grant proposals to support public health programs. Emphasis on the development of grant proposals, including narrative, program plan, evaluation design, timeline, budget justification, identifying grant sources, managing funded projects, and developing requests for proposals.

HLTH 6791 Chronic Disease Epidemiology, Prevention, and Control

The epidemiology of heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, cancer, chronic lung diseases, chronic neurologic disorders, and musculoskeletal diseases will be studied. Risk factors, extent, and modern public health approaches to the prevention and control of major chronic diseases will be covered. The public health burden of chronic disease will also be discussed.

HLTH 6911 Master of Public Health Integrative Learning Experience (MPH ILE)

The purpose of the integrative learning experience is to provide an opportunity for the student to apply the public health competencies acquired in the core courses to a public health project. It is the culminating experience in the Ohio University Master of Public Health program. This is a required culminating experience for MPH students to be taken after all core courses are completed, in partnership with a community organization/agency.

HLTH 6920 Applied Practice Experience

Students, teamed with faculty advisors and community preceptors, will apply public health concepts in a professional setting. Provides additional field experience for students.
