Curriculum Summary
The Ohio University Department of Physical Therapy/OhioHealth Orthopedic Residency Program is divided into four modules. The content and description of each module are described below. Within each module, there are clinical and didactic experiences that are integrated to enhance learning and skill development. The modules are organized in a manner to develop and advance clinical decision-making skills, manual intervention skills, and the ability to use available evidence to guide the practice of orthopedic physical therapy. In addition, opportunities for clinical and classroom teaching enable the resident to have a greater understanding of orthopedic principles and practice. Upon completion of the residency, the resident will be prepared to sit for the Orthopedic Clinical Specialist exam.
Module 1
Content
- Musculoskeletal imaging
- Advanced mobilization and manipulation skills of the upper and lower extremities and spine
- Advanced theory and practice of shoulder problems
Through clinical and didactic experiences, the resident is able to analyze various methods and theories of mobilization and manipulation. Through online and clinical mentoring with a radiologist, the resident gains in advanced knowledge and skills in imaging techniques. The use of ultrasound for point-of-care testing is taught and incorporated into clinical practice with an emphasis on shoulder diagnosis. Patient care focuses on the use of these mobilization and manipulation skills in the extremities and spine.
Module 2
Content
- Application of advanced anatomy of the musculoskeletal system
- Advanced lower quarter with an emphasis on gait and running mechanics and injuries
- Development of teaching skills
The emphasis of this module is on the lower quarter. Didactic learning experiences include instruction in advanced gait and running analysis and intervention through on-site courses, online course material, and through literature review. Advanced anatomical dissection focuses on analyzing the relationship between dysfunction and structure through prosected material and doing focused, regional dissection. Patient care will include material from Module 1 as well as working in a running clinic and focusing on evaluation and therapeutic interventions for the lower extremity. Mentoring in teaching theory and pedagogy is also included in this unit. The resident assists faculty at Ohio University Department of Physical Therapy in teaching various modules of clinical application courses. The clinical research/case study should be identified during this module.
Module 3
Content
- Development of advanced skills in low back pain
- Options for special topics in such areas as hand therapy, TMJ, vestibular evaluation and intervention, and orthotic management
- Application of teaching skills • Clinical Instructor Credentialing course
The resident will continue with clinical practice from previous modules as well as from their chosen specialty area(s). Experience in course instruction at Ohio University Department of Physical Therapy continues in this module. The resident assumes a greater role in developing and teaching a module related to clinical application in the physical therapy curriculum. Knowledge and understanding of clinical teaching will be enhanced through taking the clinical instructor credentialing course. Increased time will be spent on the clinical research/case study for data collection and analysis.
Module 4
Content
- The culmination of all previous modules
- Development of mentoring skills
- Further mentoring with physical therapists and physicians
- Completion of a clinical research project
The resident is responsible for mentoring and assisting in the orientation of the newly selected resident under the guidance of the clinical mentor. In order to develop a professional relationship between the physical therapist and physician, the resident spends significant time being mentored by a physician. The clinical research/case study culminates with a presentation to the faculty and staff of the residency program as well as potentially presenting it at a state or national professional conference. Clinical experiences will encompass all areas included in the residency.
