Doctor of Athletic Training Curriculum
All coursework for the Doctor of Athletic Training is entirely online. No campus visits are required.
Program Design
The DAT aims to develop scholarly clinicians. The proposed program will consist of a minimum of four academic semesters and a minimum of 42 credit hours. The base program consists of 17 hours of core coursework plus 13 credit hours in the Clinical Practice Track, and a minimum of 12 elective hours.
Explore additional areas of specialization by considering certificates that complement this program. Options include the Health Care Leadership Certificate, the Clinical Informatics Certificate, Health Policy Certificate, and the Performing Arts Medicine Certificate.
Graduation Requirements
Required Core Courses
All students in the DAT program must complete the following courses for a minimum of 17 hours:
- AT 6120 - Leadership and Professionalism in Athletic Training
- AT 6160 - Patient-Oriented Outcomes in Athletic Training
- AT 6222 - Statistics for Advanced Athletic Training Practice I
- AT 6310 - Neuromechanics of Sports Injury Rehabilitation
- AT 6350 - Sport Injury Risk Assessment
- IHS 5513 - Health Informatics for the Health Professions
Clinical Practice Track Requirements
All students in the DAT program must complete the following courses for a minimum of 13 hours:
- HLTH 6100 - Evaluation and Quality Improvement in Health Care
- AT 6360 - Psychosocial Issues in Athletic Training
- AT 6400 - Evidence-Based Care in Athletic Training I
- AT 6410 - Evidence-Based Care in Athletic Training II
- PT 7150 - Imaging in Rehabilitation
Electives
All DAT students must complete a minimum of 12 additional elective hours selected from among the following courses:
- IHS 6801 - Health Information Systems and Applications (depending on track)
- IHS 6803 - Program Planning and Evaluation in Healthcare (depending on track)
- AT 6900 - Special Topics in Athletic Training
- AT 6930 - Special Problems
- AGC 5140 - Academic Writing in Graduate Studies
Special Requirements
The 12 elective hours may also include courses to supplement student preparation or as designated for a particular placement track as determined by the program director.
- Students who have not previously completed an appropriate research methods course must complete EXPH 6080:
- EXPH 6080 - Research Methods and Statistical Applications
- Students placed with professional baseball organizations will normally be required to complete IHS 5900 with topic Medical Spanish:
- IHS 5900 - Special Topics in Health Sciences and Profession
Culminating Experience
Students in the clinical practice track will complete a capstone project that is applicable to their work setting. The capstone may involve a systematic review, meta-analysis, quality improvement project, or case study. The clinical research track will include original research that involves data collection and analysis resulting in a manuscript that is suitable for publication in a professional journal.
