Master of Science in Athletic Training Early Assurance Program

The purpose of this document is to describe the guidelines and requirements for undergraduate students who are enrolled in the Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training (PMSAT) Early Assurance Program (“EAP”). The goals of the program are to:

•  Attract highly talented high school students to Ohio University, and then to the Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training to complete both their undergraduate and master’s degrees. 
• Increase the potential applicant pool for the Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training.

Application Procedure

To enroll in the Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training Early Assurance Program, high school seniors must apply to Ohio University at the prescribed application date during their senior year. Ohio University will make their admission decision in accordance with their policies and procedures. Applicants must be admitted to Ohio University before they can be considered for the EAP.

Students admitted to Ohio University who meet the eligibility requirements will be invited to apply. Applicants may be interviewed for admission to the Ohio University PMSAT EAP in accordance to timelines set forth. The maximum number of students chosen for the Ohio University PMSAT EAP will be defined by OHIO Athletic Training.

If chosen by OHIO Athletic Training, successful applicants will be granted conditional admission to the Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training program prior to freshman matriculation at Ohio University. Priority will be given to those EAP candidates who submit application information as described above.

Student Responsibilities

Students who have been admitted into the EAP will complete a bachelor’s degree prior to beginning the Master of Science in athletic training program. Students will receive final acceptance into the Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training program if ALL of the following conditions are met:

1. Obtain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and a science cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher upon completion of the undergraduate degree. The cumulative grade point average used to determine whether this requirement has been satisfied will be obtained from the DARS submitted by the student to the Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training program. The science cumulative grade point average will be based on the prerequisite topics required for the Master of Science in Athletic Training Program.
2. Achieve a grade a ‘B’ or better in BIOS 3010 (Human Anatomy), BIOS 3015 (Human Anatomy Lab), BIOS 3450 (Human Physiology), and BIOS 3455 (Human Physiology Lab).
3. Maintain uninterrupted enrollment within a program offered by Ohio University every semester (summer terms optional) until undergraduate degree program requirements have been satisfied. Enrollment in a degree granting program at any other University will be considered an interruption in enrollment. Study Abroad programming and other concurrent course work at another institution may be allowable.
4. Submit materials for admission to the Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training program no later than January 15th of the year of planned enrollment in PMSAT.
   1. Materials required to be submitted:
      1. DARS dated after January 1st
      2. Verification of 50 hours of observation under direct supervision of an AT
      3. Letter from AT faculty verifying students have met all expectations of the EAP
   2. Student who meet the EAP program standards will be offered conditional admissions and must complete the following steps:
      1. Apply to the graduate college (application fee and GRE requirement is waived for EAP students)
      2. Complete a criminal background
      3. Complete a toxicology screen
      4. Submit immunization records and health screening
      5. Sign technical standards
   3. Successful completion of the requirements of conditional admissions will grant student full admission to the program.
5. Students in the EAP must also complete all prerequisite course requirements for students accepted into the PMSAT program. The required course work must be a grade of C or better except for those noted in #2. At time of application to the PMSAT, students may only have three prerequisite courses remaining. Successful completion of any remaining courses must be demonstrated prior to August 1st or else conditional admissions offer will be rescinded.
6. EAP participants will engage in clinical observations with athletic trainers in the geographic area of Ohio University. EAP participants will also be advised by the PMSAT program director and be linked with a current PMSAT student to provide insight into life as an athletic training student. Where appropriate, EAP participants will be invited to participate in PMSAT programming and activities designed to provide a first-hand look in the athletic training school experience and to adapt to the PMSAT culture and community.
7. Maintain yearly contact with the pre-professional advisor or designee, to insure that all requirements are being satisfied for direct admission into the PMSAT degree program. EAP participants will also meet periodically with the PMSAT program director during the program for additional insight into the expectations and opportunities associated with the athletic training school experience. Upon completion of the undergraduate degree program, the preprofessional advisor, or designee, will provide notification to the Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training program if all requirements for direct admission have been satisfied.

Loss of Conditional Admission Status

A student in this program will lose Conditional Admission status into Ohio University Professional Master of Science in Athletic Training program if ANY of the following occur during the completion of the undergraduate degree program:

1. Withdrawal from Ohio University or transfer to a degree-granting program at another university
2. Failure to complete the undergraduate degree program within a period of six years. An exception may be made for medical conditions that can be substantiated according to applicable PMSAT policy or military deployment.
3. Violate a standard of academic or ethical conduct policy or any other applicable policy of Ohio University where the potential outcome could result in a failing assignment or exam grade, a failing course grade, or disciplinary action (including but not limited to probation, suspension, expulsion or removal from the university). All such violations will be handled through appropriate Ohio University policies and notification will be sent to PMSAT to reflect the infraction(s) and any institutional action. The determination of whether such violation could result in the removal of EAP status into the PMSAT program will be determined by the PMSAT program. Such a determination is appealable to the PMSAT Program Director.
4. Failure to submit required application materials by the specified deadlines. Failure to complete the program requirements described under the section entitled "Student Responsibilities" and/or program violations described under the section entitled "Loss of Early Assurance Admission Status" will result in the revocation of conditional admission status to the Ohio University PMSAT program.

However, students in this program who lose their conditional admission status may still choose to apply for admission to the Ohio University PMSAT program. Should a student subsequently choose to apply to Ohio University PMSAT program, he or she will need to proceed through the entirety of the regular admissions process, including taking the GRE, completing the ATCAS application, and interviewing with Ohio University PMSAT program, should an invitation to interview be extended.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration, a student must:

• Have applied to Ohio University (and eventually earn admission).
• Be in an approved major
• Have an equivalent high school GPA of 3.5 or greater on a 4.0 scale
• Suggested the student completed four units of English, four units of math, three units of science, two units of foreign language, one unit of visual or performing arts, and four additional electives in high school
