Many graduate and professional schools require a personal statement. Consider meeting with a career coach to brainstorm about your goals for a statement or to review the content in a draft statement. 

Personal Statement Checklist

Below are common elements included in well-written statements. Not all statements have each of the items listed below, but these suggestions are a good starting point.

  • Determine whether there are specific prompts to answer for your program of interest
  • If there are prompts, answer them with specific details
  • Include relevant information about your educational background
  • Feature select skills, accomplishments, or experiences that make you a strong candidate
  • Explain how graduate study will impact your short and long-term goals 
  • Identify how your goals and interests align with the program and its faculty 
  • Review your statement for correct spelling and grammar
