
Mariana L. R. Dantas received her Ph.D from the Johns Hopkins University. Her work and research interests focus on the history of the African Diaspora and African slavery in the early modern Atlantic world. She is the author of “Homens do Ferro e do Fogo: Escravos nas fábricas de ferro de Maryland no período Colonial,” Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Pesquisa Histórica 17 (Ago. 2000): 65-79; “‘For the Benefit of the Common Good’: Regiments of Caçadores do Mato in Minas Gerais, Brazil”, Journal of Colonial History and Colonialism (Fall, 2004); and the forthcoming article, “Inheritance practices among individuals of African origin and descent in Eighteenth-century Minas Gerais, Brazil,” in Freed Slaves - Integration and Exclusion, editor Marc Kleijwegt. She is currently revising her book manuscript entitled, “Black Townsmen: a comparative study of slaves and freed persons in Baltimore, Maryland, and Sabará, Minas Gerais, 1750-1810”. Professor Dantas teaches courses in US history, African-American history, the history of slavery in the Americas, colonial Latin American history, and the history of Brazil.
