The Geoffrey Smith Undergraduate Scholarship

To mark the occasion of his retirement after a long and distinguished career at Ohio University, the Department of Geological Sciences is pleased to announce the establishment of the Geoffrey W. Smith Undergraduate Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to attract high school students with solid science backgrounds to our undergraduate program by supplementing existing university scholarships that the candidates are likely to receive.

Since incoming freshmen may not receive support in excess of student fees, the scholarship will be permitted to range in value from $500 to $1000. It is the intention of the department to award scholarships to the value of $1000 dollars annually drawn from the department's endowment account. However, the number of scholarships awarded and their value will be variable, depending on the number of applicants and their qualifications, and the financial resources of the department.

To qualify for the scholarship, candidates must be in the top 20% of their graduating class and must meet the university-wide requirements of an ACT score greater than 28 or an SAT score greater than 1240. The department will also set the additional requirement of at least 3 years of high school science.

Applicants will be reviewed in February by the department faculty following release of the university-wide applicant database. The number of scholarships to be awarded and their value will be determined at that time and the college notified of the result. It is intended that the first such review will take place in February each year so that the scholarship can be awarded for the following academic year.
