Removal of Undergraduate Deficiencies
Removal of undergraduate deficiencies should be undertaken during the first year of residence by completing appropriate coursework. Successful completion of this coursework will be registered by the instructor in the student's permanent file. Failure to overcome a subject area deficiency will result in loss of graduate standing.
Choice of Option
All students should specify their choice of option at the time of their application to the program, and must choose which of the six graduate options (Geology, Environmental Geology, Environmental Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Geoscience Education) they wish to pursue upon their arrival on campus so that deficiencies (if any) can be determined. A student may subsequently change options but, on doing so, will become subject to the admission and degree requirements of the option chosen.
Courses for Graduate Study
All graduate students, regardless of their option, are required to complete at least eight letter-graded graduate courses in addition to completion of a thesis. Credit toward a graduate degree is given for the completion of courses numbered 500-699. Courses offered by the Department are listed in the Graduate Catalog. However, ongoing curricular study and revision in the Department may result in some changes in the listings. Students should, therefore, check with their advisors before planning their schedules.
Colloquium
All graduate students on financial support are required to take Geology 692 (Colloquium) each quarter. Colloquium speakers are brought in for students’ benefit.
