Outline of Geosciences Education Option

Applicants for this program are expected have either an undergraduate degree in Geology or an Education degree with significant coursework in the Earth and other sciences. Students with minimal geological backgrounds need to consult with their advisor regarding a course of study. The following undergraduate level courses, or equivalents, are required, or must be completed as deficiencies that do not fulfill course requirements of the M.S. degree:
¤ Introduction to Geology (GEOL 101)
   ¤ Historical Geology (GEOL 255)
¤ three additional 300 or 400 level courses

Graduate Requirements
The Geoscience Education option requires the completion of a minimum of eight letter-graded graduate courses plus a thesis in geoscience education. At least six of these courses must be courses offered through the Department of Geological Sciences (including the core course, listed below). Courses taken outside of the department must be approved by the faculty as fulfilling course requirements for the M.S. degree.

Geoscience Education Core Course:
¤ GEOL 569 Education Theory and Practice for Scientists

Focus Courses (five are required):
¤ GEOL 505 Modeling and Computational Methods in Geology
   ¤ GEOL 527 Water Geochemistry
   ¤ GEOL 528 Physical Geochemistry
   ¤ GEOL 529 Contaminant Geochemistry
¤ GEOL 532 Origin & Classification of Soils
¤ GEOL 543 Advanced Invertebrate Paleontology
¤ GEOL 546 Earth Systems Evolution
   ¤ GEOL 548 Paleoecology

   ¤ GEOL 553 Physical Limnology
   ¤ GEOL 554 Fluvial Sedimentology
   ¤ GEOL 555 Limnogeology
   ¤ GEOL 557 Petroleum Geology
   ¤ GEOL 564 Regional Tectonics
   ¤ GEOL 566 Geodynamics
