Welcome to the Home Page of the Department of Economics at Ohio
University. You are only a click or two away from information about the
department's graduate and undergraduate programs, its faculty, and its
research interests. Please continue on. But if you would like to speak
with a real person, please don't hesitate to call me at 740-593-2040.
Economics is concerned with everyday life and how consumers,
families, business, and government maximize their well-being. The
discipline examines all human behavior, including such topis as why people
save and invest, have children, and migrate to other countries.
Economics is concerned with such diverse topics as why nations take on
certain shapes and sizes, why some economies experience growth while
others suffer decline, why some firms innovate while other firms only
copy others' innovations, and why some public policies work while others
fail.
Economics requires a diverse set of skills and is a challenging
major. Our students need to use mathematics, history, statistics and
logic to solve problems. Though economics is not for everyone, it is
an excellent preparation for many careers, including business, academics,
foreign service, government, private consulting, banking and finance,
and the law. Our alums are all over the world, doing many things in these
and other professions and doing them well. When they return for visits,
alums almost always tell us that their preparation in economics helps them
"out-think" their co-workers and competitors.
At Ohio University, we focus on producing well trained students who
can easily and quickly move into the workforce or on to graduate school.
We have a young active department which is dedicated to high level research. At the same time,
however, we are strongly committed to effective teaching at all levels-
freshman through graduate.
