Department Spotlight: Marketing

Research highlights from the Department of Marketing

  • James “Mick” Andzulis, O Bleness Associate Professor of Marketing, primarily conducts research in the sales, sales management, strategy and technology areas. Mick’s recent article titled “Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys? Frontline Employee Perceptions Customer Deviant Behaviors and Service Firms’ Guardianship Policies” is published in the Journal of Service Research. This research sought to better understand customer deviant behavior (CDB) and the impact of associated retail guardianship policies on frontline employees (FLEs) through the lens of an increasing business/cultural problem - shoplifting. Results show that guardianship, or mandatory policing, often produces strong negative emotions, leading to perceptions of unfairness and increased turnover. The study also revealed that employees predisposed to anxiety have the most aversion to policing policies that require active enforcement, an indication that retailers should better identify candidates with confrontation anxiety and provide training to help all employees reduce and manage anxiety caused by guardianship. FLEs and their managers should receive training that includes how best to cope with, de-escalate and handle CDB to increase FLE self-efficacy and decrease burnout. Establishing and communicating guardianship policies at hire is the best way to manage CDB and enhance employee retention.
  • Nikolaos (Nick) Panagopoulos, O’Bleness Professor of Marketing, is an award-winning author, professor, and consultant working in the areas of selling, sales management, and marketing strategy. His recent article titled “Will you speak up for me? Inducing retail store managers’ engagement with MNCs’ brands across cultures” is published in the Journal of International Business Studies, which is included in the two prestigious journal lists: the Financial Times -50 and the UT-Dallas-25. The study provides key insights to many consumer goods multinational companies (MNCs), which operate host-market subsidiaries, and which are responsible for managing relationships with local retailers. These retailers often follow a decentralized approach by formally involving their store managers in key decision-making processes related to the MNCs’ brands. In this context, MNCs are interested in learning how they should grow their brands across countries with different cultures. By employing a unique dataset of MNC subsidiaries over nine Latin American countries, five data sources, and three time periods, the study shows that engaging and motivating local retail store managers to be a voice for MNCs’ brand is critical for unlocking a brand’s sales growth across international markets and cultures. Importantly, cross-cultural differences play an influential role on the localized relationship, supplier, and customer-focused engagement strategies.
