Why do you want to be an OHIO First Scholars Advocate?
I am very excited about the OHIO First Scholars Advocate program. I am also a first-gen college graduate. My family did not understand the higher education process, so it was something I did on my own. I graduated from a local high school and went to Ohio University for two years before I decided work was more important. This was a big mistake and because I was the first in my family to attend college I did not understand how valuable my education was or how much it would be needed to advance in my career. After several years of working and realizing that my education was important I returned to Ohio University as a full time student, full time employee, wife and mom and completed my bachelors degree. Returning to school as a non-traditional student was very difficult, luckily I was able to join a cohort of other non-traditional students and had their support and mentorship. I want to be able to help mentor first-gen students and to be someone that they can comfortably turn to to ask advice and share stories. I truly value my education and Ohio University, and am committed to helping my fellow Bobcats.
