Peer Tutoring at the STEM Academy

Peer Tutoring is free academic support provided by students who have successfully completed the courses they tutor.

Whether you're tackling a challenging assignment, preparing for an exam, learning new software, or looking for study strategies, our peer tutors are here to help you become a more confident, independent learner. Tutoring is designed to support your learning—not simply provide answers—through collaborative problem solving, guided practice, and encouragement.

We offer collaborative group tutoring, individualized one-on-one support for students with approved accommodations and specialized needs, embedded tutoring in select courses, and technology assistance through our Digital Learning Lab—all at no cost to Ohio University students.

Located in Morton Hall 415, STEM Academy makes it easy for STEM students to access peer tutoring in the same building where many of their classes take place.

Services Offered through the STEM Academy

  • Small Group Tutoring

Small Group Tutoring offers personalized support for 1-3 students enrolled in the same course, providing a collaborative space to tackle challenging concepts together. Led by experienced peer tutors, these sessions allow for focused attention on your specific questions while benefiting from group discussion and problem-solving. It's a great way to deepen your understanding and prepare for assignments or exams with fellow classmates!

  • One-on-One Tutoring

One-on-One Tutoring offers individualized support with a peer tutor focused on your specific questions, learning goals, and coursework. These sessions provide dedicated time to work through challenging concepts, review material, prepare for exams, and strengthen your understanding. It's a great option for students who benefit from personalized guidance and focused problem-solving with a tutor!

  • Digital Learning Lab

Meet with a peer tutor to learn the technology used in your courses. Digital Learning Lab appointments focus on software and academic technology—including SPSS, Excel, ALEKS, and other course-specific tools—helping you spend less time troubleshooting and more time learning.

  • Embedded Tutoring

Embedded Tutoring integrates a peer tutor directly into your course, offering support both during class and through dedicated sessions outside of class time. Ideal for specialized, project-based, or active learning courses, the tutor works alongside students in real-time to guide problem-solving and hands-on activities. Outside of class, they hold additional sessions to reinforce learning and assist with course-specific challenges.

Peer Tutoring FAQs

What should I bring to my tutoring session?

Bring your textbook, class notes, syllabus, and any specific assignments or problems you're struggling with. It's also helpful to come prepared with questions or topics you’d like to cover. Having everything ready ensures you can make the most of your session.

But is you aren't sure what questions to ask - we can still help! Bring all your materials and your tutor will help you identify areas you understand & those you may need to work on.

I tried tutoring, but my tutor wasn't a good fit. What should I do?

We understand that sometimes a tutor might not be the best match for your learning style. You can always request to switch tutors! Reach out to our office at tutoring@ohio.edu, and we’ll help you find another tutor that better suits your needs. Your comfort and success are our priority.

What if I can’t make it to my session?

If you know you can't attend, try to cancel your appointment as soon as possible using our online scheduling system or by calling, emailing, or stopping by our office. This allows another student to take the slot, and it helps tutors plan accordingly. If something unexpected comes up, let us know at your earliest convenience.

Remember that one (1) missed session or two (2) cancelled sessions will result in an automatic block on your TracCloud account. If that happens, please email tutoring@ohio.edu and a staff member can work with you to clear the block.

If you are able to cancel with 48 hours notice - send us an email and we can delete your session so you don't incur a penalty. Our goal is to keep as many sessions open for students seeking support as possible - not to unduely penalize you when life happens.

How often can I schedule tutoring sessions?

You can schedule tutoring sessions weekly or as often as you need. If you feel that regular weekly sessions would help, many students benefit from reserving a spot for consistent support throughout the semester.

You are also welcome to schedule up to three (3) tutoring sessions a week on your own. If you want to sign up for additional sessions - let us know!

I can't find a tutor. What should I do?

If no tutoring sessions are showing up in the TracCloud search, please let us know. You can email tutoring@ohio.edu, call our front desk, or stop by the office and we can assist you.

Unfortunately, we can't staff a tutor for every course. But we will try our best to find you someone to work with or we will try to help you find alternative support elsewhere on campus.

Is tutoring free?

Yes! All services provided by the AAC are free to students for as many times as you want to visit us.
