Tips for keeping residential spaces dry and healthy during humid weather

When it comes to mold and mildew, prevention is key. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that molds are found in virtually every environment, and they can thrive in warm, humid places, including our residence halls and University buildings.

Moisture control, air circulation and good housekeeping practices are essential to controlling its growth.

Tips for preventing mold and mildew growth

• Report any water issues/leaks immediately by contacting Facilities Management and Safety (740-593-2911).
• Set the air conditioning thermostat to the correct set point for your specific hall. Set point details are on the back of your residential room door and online.
• Run the fan on auto/continuous to reduce condensation and to maintain proper airflow.
• Do not open windows during cooling or heating season.
• Keep room air vents (where applicable) in all areas open and unobstructed to maintain proper airflow.
• Do not hang towels (or any other wet items) to dry between the mattress and bed frame.
• If a bath exhaust fan is provided in your living space (example – suites), be sure to turn the fan on when showering. After your shower, keep the shower door closed and the fan running for an extra 10 to 15 minutes to remove excess moisture from the air.
• Practice good housekeeping by vacuuming floors, wiping down counters, cleaning up spills quickly, washing out refrigerators, wiping down doors, etc. on a regular basis.

• Assess the entire area for mold.
• Investigate and determine if there are any mechanical issues that need to be addressed and enter the necessary work orders to make repairs. 
• Clean any impacted areas with a mold-cleaning solution.
• Replace your air conditioner if mold is suspected within the current unit.
• If needed, FM will also provide you with a dehumidifier to help alleviate any ongoing moisture concerns.
