Extreme heat: Safety tips and energy conservation efforts
Due to extreme heat across the Midwest, Facilities Management (FM) will increase its efforts to reduce energy usage on the Athens Campus where possible from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30. FM will continue to monitor energy usage throughout the rest of the week and as the extreme heat continues.
In addition to helping conserve energy, Facilities Management encourages individuals to help across our community by turning off lights, computers and other electronics when not in use.
Please feel free to contact Facilities Operations at 740-593-2911 if you have any questions or concerns.
Ohio University also encourages students, faculty, staff and community members to take simple steps to stay safe and avoid heat-related illness.
The following recommendations are adapted from guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
- Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces or the shade if you're spending time outdoors.
- Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps and excessive sweating.
- Check in on friends, coworkers and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.
