DOJ extends digital accessibility deadlines; Ohio University continues progress

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced a one‑year extension to federal digital accessibility deadlines under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), giving public institutions additional time to ensure websites and mobile apps are accessible.

Under the Interim Final Rule, compliance for larger state and local governments (serving 50,000+ residents) moves to April 26, 2027, while smaller entities now have until April 26, 2028.

While timelines have shifted, requirements remain unchanged. Public entities must still meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards for digital content.

At Ohio University, accessibility efforts continue without pause. A cross-campus working group—including Accessibility Services, OIT, and University Communications and Marketing—is actively providing guidance and resources to support accessible teaching, documents, and web content.

The University’s newly redesigned digital accessibility website will expand resources throughout the next academic year. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to seek support and continue improving accessibility across all digital materials.
