Cleveland event, exhibit to honor Voinovich School namesake

The Slovenian Museum and Archives in Cleveland is set to honor the legacy of the George V. Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service’s namesake next month with an exhibit celebrating the longtime public servant’s life and accomplishments.

Friends and alumni of the Ohio University school are invited to attend the free kickoff event for "Together We Can Do It! George Voinovich and the Work of Government," scheduled for 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12 at the Slovenian National Home and Slovenian Museum and Archives, located at 6407-6417 St. Clair Ave.

The exhibit opening will feature a panel discussion. Panelists will include: Elizabeth Sullivan, director of opinion at Cleveland.com, the Rev. Dr. Theophilus Caviness of the Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church, Timothy Cosgrove of Cosgrove Jonhenry LLC, Faith Voinovich, a Voinovich School alumna and granddaughter of George Voinovich, and Cleveland Councilman Michael D. Polensek.

“Senator Voinovich's Slovenian and Serbian roots, not to mention his Catholic faith, spurred his passion for public service, belief in government, and outlook on the world,” according to a statement from  the event organizers. The exhibit, which will run through the Cleveland Kurentovanje festival (Feb. 14 and beyond), will include artifacts, photos, archival materials and personal stories of the former mayor, state lawmaker, governor and U.S. Senator.

The event is open to all. Registration is not required, but attendees are encouraged to register here to receive a reminder email prior to the event containing links to tune in as well as information on how to access other relevant information.

Th exhibit is made possible through a partnership between the Slovenian Museum, Global Cleveland, the Voinovich School and the George V. Voinovich Collection, both at OHIO.
