Bobcat Academy summer programs cultivate young minds at Ohio University Southern

As the summer sun begins to shine, Ohio University Southern is gearing up to host its annual Bobcat Academy summer program from July 22 – 26. Aimed at youth entering first grade through sixth grade, this week-long event promises an array of engaging activities designed to foster leadership, academic prowess, and imaginative exploration.

Participants will embark on a journey of discovery, learning, and fun from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The academy offers a diverse range of experiences, ensuring there's something for every young mind eager to learn and grow.

"We're thrilled to welcome young Bobcats to our campus for a week filled with learning and excitement," said Teresa Smith, summer programming coordinator at OHIO Southern. "Bobcat Academy is more than just a summer camp; it's an opportunity for children to explore new interests, develop valuable skills, and create lasting memories in a supportive and enriching environment."

Registration for the academy is now open, with a fee of $40 per participant. This fee covers the cost of the program, as well as a Bobcat Academy t-shirt, water bottle, and daily snacks. Parents are asked to provide a packed lunch for their young attendees each day. To secure a spot, interested families are encouraged to register by July 1.

Throughout the week, participants will engage in a variety of activities. From yoga sessions led by instructor Kyle Kemats to hands-on experience with video cameras guided by electronic media instructor Ernie Hall, each day promises new opportunities for growth and exploration.

Monday through Thursday will feature an exciting lineup of workshops, including:

  • Yoga: Led by Kemats, participants will practice simple yoga poses, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques.
  • Lights, Camera, Action: Under the guidance of Hall, students will delve into the world of video production, gaining hands-on experience with cameras and editing tools.
  • Art Camp: Hosted by Third and Center, this workshop will ignite participants' creativity as they explore various art mediums and techniques.
  • Cooking Class: Attendees will have the chance to whip up their own culinary creations, including smoothies made using a unique bicycle-powered blender.

The excitement continues on Friday, when campers will enjoy a day of outdoor fun featuring a wide range of activities and special guests. Highlights include a visit from the Ironton Fire Department, crafting with the Briggs Lawrence County Library, virtual reality experiences courtesy of the Lawrence County Community Action Organization, Sphero Bot adventures with OSU Extension, as well as games, music, and a pizza party to cap off the week-long festivities.
