Keeping Bobcats Informed, Jan 18, 2023

Bobcat Parents and Families,

Though this message typically comes from the Dean, I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Lyn Redington and I have recently stepped in as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs. I am so thrilled to be joining the OHIO community as it is a privilege to work with such bright and motivated students.

Prior to coming to Athens, I served as the vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Idaho State University. Throughout my 30 years in higher education, I have remained committed to students' academic excellence and achievement, and my time at OHIO will be no different.

I am also pleased to share that Kathy Fahl, who has most recently served as the interim dean of students, has agreed to serve in that role full-time. Kathy has been with the University since 2018 and continues to serve as a top student advocate.

On behalf of all of us in Student Affairs, we look forward to another successful semester. Please remember you can always reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Go Bobcats!

Habits: You Are What You Do.

This time of year you might be thinking about new habits you want to create. You might want to study consistently, apply to internships, or get outside. Whatever it is, you'll find more success in establishing and sustaining a new behavior if you make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, and make it satisfying.

Let's take the example of applying to internships. There are many steps to applying to an internship, so we'll assume you already have a basic resume and a list of positions you're planning to submit applications to.

Make it obvious

Get specific and pair it with a current habit. When I turn on my laptop in the morning, I'll pick one position to submit my resume to.

Make it attractive

Make the new habit something you crave by pairing it with something you love doing. After I submit my resume, I'll watch Netflix!

Make it easy

Remove barriers to performing the habit. Before I start applying to positions, I'll have my resume reviewed by a career coach.

Make it satisfying

Sustain the new habit with a reward. If I submit three resumes in a week, I'll buy myself a treat at Front Room Coffeehouse.

From James Clear's "Atomic habits: An easy and proven way to build good habits and break bad ones," you can learn how to achieve any goal by breaking it down into the habits needed to accomplish it.
