Scripps College of Communication alumnus Ken Klein shares news via social media about Scripps students, alumni and faculty. Here is his recap of November 2022.

Before Thanksgiving, global visual content creator Getty Images unveiled its Year in Review of 2022’s most powerful stories. Getty’s impressive archive features work of award-wining visual communication alumni Drew Angerer, Maddie Meyer and Sarah Stier.

Honoring a Scripps tradition, 2014 photojournalism graduate Meyer returned to campus: a former student as teacher. On Nov. 1, Meyer reviewed student photo portfolios and presented at Schoonover Center. Her sports photos were displayed in the VisCom Gallery in Schoonover October 24 through November 25

Based in Boston, Meyer covers sports. Her photos in Getty Images Year in Review included skiers in California and the Beijing Winter Olympics, European women’s soccer and swimmers in Texas.

Getty’s best-of-2022 package also includes VisCom alumnus Drew Angerer’s photos of Ukraine President Zelensky’s virtual address to Congress and President Biden wearing aviator sunglasses. Angerer and colleagues at Getty Images won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News. 

New York-based Getty Images photographer and 2018 VisCom alumna Sarah Stier was featured in Getty’s Year in Review via her photo of players after the England vs. Germany women’s soccer final July 31. 

Concurrent to Meyer’s return-to-campus visit, journalism graduate Joe Donatelli returned to alma mater Mayfield High School, talking up Ohio University to future journalists. Donatelli is digital director at News 5 Cleveland WEWS.

On Nov. 16, journalism graduate Meryl Gottlieb shared insights via the Joe Berman Lecture Series on the Future of Media. 

Faculty in Atlanta

Twenty Ohio University alumni, students and faculty attended the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar (Nov. 11-12), where Scripps-trained visual journalists Boyzell Hosey of ProPublica and Marcus Yam of the Los Angeles Times were featured speakers.

Awards/Honors

The Hollywood Reporter published its annual list of young executives making an early mark on Hollywood, including 2010 Communication graduate Mark R. Wright. In Los Angeles, Wright is vice president/film at Higher Ground Productions, which was founded in 2018 by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.

At a national conference in Dallas, the award-winning Scripps chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) received the 2022 Teahan Award for diversity. The current chapter president is senior journalism major Olivia Strauss.

Varied career paths

2015 integrated media graduate Garrett Anderson made his first oral arguments at the Ohio Second District Court of Appeals. Anderson, also a 2020 graduate of Capital University Law School, had OHIO-in-LA internships including as a “stunt tester” in Los Angeles. He now is an assistant attorney general in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

2020 journalism graduate Sarah Horne joined Latham & Watkins in Washington, DC as a conflicts assistant. In May, Horne completed an MBA from Florida International University. 

In New York, 2013 media arts and studies graduate Jessica Rovniak was promoted to director of social video at Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service.

2015 journalism graduate Josh Jamerson is now east coast bureau chief at The Wall Street Journal.

Sports gems

• Communication studies senior Kurtis Rourke (Bobcat quarterback sidelined by late-season injury) is a semi-finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award.
• Cleveland.com hired 2018 Scripps graduate Jimmy Watkins as “rivalry writer” to cover Browns-Steelers, Ohio State-Michigan and more. His first day on the new job (Nov. 21) was in Ann Arbor with Michigan coaches and players during Rivalry Week.
• In an overtime thriller, Michigan beat OHIO men’s basketball in Ann Arbor. Michigan’s play-by -play caller is 2011 journalism graduate Brian Boesch 
• 2012 journalism graduate Tanner Smith joined New York Road Runners as director of video and photography.
• In football, OHIO beat Bowling Green 38-14 on Nov. 22. Senior photojournalist Tanner Pearson was a bit nostalgic: “Last home OU football game of the season and last home game in my senior year! Certainly going to miss standing side line photographing the Bobcats.”
