OHIO celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with various events

Hispanic Heritage Month is in full swing and there are several events taking place across campus to help celebrate.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to recognize the contributions made by people of Hispanic descent and to celebrate Hispanic culture. It begins Sept. 15 each year to mark independence day for five Latin American countries (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador).

There will be several events each week until Oct. 15. Most events will only take place once, but a tabling event takes place outside the top of Baker University Center every Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The events include:

  • An Afro-Latino Appreciation Event will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 in Bentley Hall 306.
  • A Capoeira Workshop will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 29. The location for the Workshop will be announced at a later date.
  • Cafe y Chisme will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in Multicultural Center Room 219 in Baker University Center.
  • A showing of “In the Heights” will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 in the Living Learning Center.
  • An Indigenous Peoples Day and Panel will be held Oct. 11. The time and location within Baker University Center will be announced at a later date.
  • A movie night will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 in Scripps Hall Room 111.
  • A volleyball and barbecue event will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 15 on the South Green.
  • Rosebud Ben-Oni, a bisexual Jewish-Mexican writer, will speak at a virtual Zoom event at 7 p.m. Oct. 14.
