Mac antivirus protection transitioning to Microsoft Defender ATP

To align antivirus solutions across OHIO computer platforms, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) will transition the University’s Mac antivirus solution to Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP).

For University-managed Macs that currently use System Center Endpoint Protection or ESET Endpoint Antivirus (ESET) as an antivirus platform, no action is required. All managed Macs will be moved to the new antivirus solution on Oct. 27, 2020 at 7 p.m. University-managed Mac users can make the switch to ATP ahead of time via the Self-Service portal.

If a Mac is not University-managed, this change will not affect the device. Enrolling a device in the University’s Mac management system will give users access to the most up-to-date operating system, antivirus protection, and other software solutions. This service is only for University-owned devices at this time. Upon initial setup, all devices deployed by OIT are automatically enrolled in this service.

Please direct all questions and customer requests about Mac management and the new Mac antivirus solution to the Service Desk at servicedesk@ohio.edu
