Eleven OHIO students received Gilman Scholarships to study abroad during the 2019-2020 academic year

Eleven Ohio University students received Gilman Scholarships for studying abroad during the 2019-2020 academic year, as well as one OHIO student receiving one of the first ever Gilman-McCain Scholarships. Two other OHIO students were named alternates for the Gilman Scholarship.

"Our Gilman applicants do amazing work,” director of the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards Christopher Lewis said. “Each of them thinks carefully about the importance of cross-cultural communication and ambassadorship in their fields. I commend them for their incredible achievements."

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students to study or intern abroad, gaining skills critical to national security and economic competitiveness. It is open to Pell grant recipients, with the goal of broadening the number of Americans who have long-term (three weeks or longer) experiences abroad.

“I am so proud of each and every Gilman applicant,” Office of Global Opportunities director Catherine Marshall said. “Every student, whether they receive an award or not, learns so much during the application process. I am honored to be able to advise students as they learn to tell their stories in a compelling and competitive way. I highly encourage all Pell-eligible students to consider applying for the Gilman scholarship to support a study abroad experience.”

The following students received Gilman Scholarships:

  • Harper Reese of Athens, Ohio (Ireland, $3,000)
  • Eniko Karaszi of Kent, Ohio (Hungary, $5,000)
  • Kaylyn Temple of Dayton, Ohio (Brazil, $3,000)

  • Kaitlyn Jones of Herndon, Va. (South Africa, $3,000)
  • Kevin Lockett of Cleveland, Ohio (Morocco, $2,000)
  • Jennifer Ayarkwa of Columbus, Ohio (Spain, $3,500)
  • Skyla Aiderman of Jackson, Ohio (alternate, United Kingdom)
  • Jacqueline Grant of Avon, Ohio (alternate, Italy)

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship, a new scholarship for this year, supports study abroad for children of active U.S. military people, making OHIO student Elizabeth Alfreno of Harrisville, Pa. (Spain, $5,000) one of the first recipients of the award.

Due to COVID-19, it is still unclear whether the students who earned these funds will be able to use them to study abroad for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The Gilman Scholarship is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Students interested in learning more about the Gilman Scholarship are encouraged to reach out to the Office of Global Opportunities or the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards.
