Specialized studies major interns with Developmental Disabilities Board

Tyaira Williams

Class Year: 2020

Major: Bachelor of Specialized Studies BSS concentration in Child Learning and Development

Internship Title: Early Intervention Intern

Internship Site: Athens County Board of Developmental Disabilities (ACBDD)

Site Supervisor: Mary Ann Smathers

Through her internship at the ACBDD Tyaira became more knowledgeable about the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, Help Me Grow, Early Intervention system, policy and procedures by attending evaluations, assessments, and home visits. She gained an understanding of the daily task and assignments of someone who works in a team setting providing services. From this internship, she learned about career possibilities in early intervention.

“Interacting and empathizing with families almost seems natural due to my acquired knowledge from my coursework," Tyaira said. "Thanks to the many child development courses I have taken, I am able to identify appropriate developmental milestones which is key to this job.”

Tyaira's supervisor praised her conduct and performance. “Tyaira has been a delight to have in our early intervention program!" said Smathers. "She always has a cheerful attitude, asks appropriate questions, follows through on tasks and recommendations quite efficiently! She conducts herself professionally on home visits and at team meetings. It has been refreshing for me to have an intern who is already working with young children and who already has a strong child development foundation. She is becoming a strong advocate for those with developmental disabilities!”
