The Van Gogh Affect

Sept. 24, 2021 - March 27, 2022

The Van Gogh Affect is an exhibition of work by award-winning photographers Lynn Johnson and Patricia Lanza, addressing the artist Vincent Van Gogh’s profound and ever-present influence on contemporary perceptions of the world. Simultaneously contemplating and reaffirming Van Gogh’s resounding posthumous influence over art and culture of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, Johnson and Lanza offer evocative insight into the artist’s uniquely sensitive lived experience of place and light.

The exhibition includes images Johnson created 25 years ago for a National Geographic story, Lullaby in Color, which the photojournalist has called “a meditation on why we, as humans, need creativity in our core — why the art spirit is a life force that can fuel both wonder and addiction.” Recent images created for the exhibition by both Johnson and Lanza were produced during a joint creative pilgrimage through France and The Netherlands in 2018 – 2019. Working in collaboration with the Saint-Paul Asylum in Saint-Rémy, the visual journalists were granted special access in their exploration of the still-functioning sanitarium and the village of Auvers-sur-Oise.

Lanza’s color images reflect the interior and exterior spaces of their exploration, while Johnson’s new work includes large-scale black-and-white portraits of the women who continue to create art in the very rooms and gardens that inspired Van Gogh.
