Ohio University, City of Athens named one of the country’s safest for college students

Ohio University was recently named one of the safest colleges in the United States, appearing 21st out of more than 2,000 institutions on the list compiled by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, a national trade association that works to further industry education and public knowledge about safety and security.

“We appreciate being recognized as one of the Safest Colleges in America,” said Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis. “We are committed to the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff and visitors and take pride in working with our community to achieve a safe and welcoming campus environment.”

The list was developed using the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the National Center for Education Statistics, and includes colleges and universities that experience low crime rates on and off campus.

“I am pleased that our campus has been recognized as one of the safest in the country,” said Ohio University Police Department Chief Andrew Powers. “Through enforcement, investigation, community outreach efforts and other resources, OUPD works to protect and serve our campus, but each and every member of the OHIO community contributes to the safety and security of students, faculty, staff and visitors.”

Educational programming, including workshops and sessions covering topics including self defense, ALiCE active shooter training and fest safety, among others, remains an important priority for OUPD, according to Powers.

Contributing to the safe environment of OHIO’s campus, the City of Athens is also recognized for its low crime rates.

“Athens is a richly diverse and inclusive community where all are welcome. That said, it is the concerted efforts of both the Athens Police Department and Ohio University Police Department in effective community-engagement policing techniques that make Athens a safe and healthy community,” said Athens Mayor Steve Patterson.
