Instructional designer receives Blackboard Exemplary Course Award

Kyle Rosenberger, an instructional designer in the Office of Instructional Innovation (OII), recently received a Blackboard Exemplary Course Award for Professionalism and Leadership in Medicine, a course he designed for the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Rosenberger is one of OII’s distributed staff whose primary focus is to provide instructional design support to a designated college.

The Blackboard Exemplary Course Award is bestowed twice a year to faculty and course designers worldwide who create innovative courses that demonstrate excellence in technology and learning. The award focuses on four areas of course distinction: design, interaction and collaboration, assessment, and learner support. Rosenberger was one of seven recipients recognized by Blackboard in June.

“I am indebted to an amazing group of colleagues, instructors, and mentors who have strongly influenced my development as a designer. Without their guidance, feedback, and encouragement through the years, I would not have received this award. I would like to give a very heartfelt ‘thank you’ to them all,” he said.

“This type of designation shines an international spotlight on Ohio University and the innovative ways we are advancing the mission of higher education. I could not be more proud of Mr. Rosenberger and his ground-breaking work in online course design. Online education is the future and it feels good to be on the cutting edge,” Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis said.

Rosenberger said when he was developing the new course he focused on the fundamentals of quality online course design, such as strong goals and objectives, intuitive navigation, ease of accessing course materials, and learner support. He also strived to keep it simple and remember the mantra “less is more.”

“It is important to keep in mind that you are designing for someone else’s experience, not your own. No one enjoys overly complex things and this applies to online courses. The more time students spend trying to navigate a course, the less time they spend learning,” Rosenberger said.

Nicole Wadsworth, D.O., associate dean of academic affairs and an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Heritage College, was the primary faculty member Rosenberger worked with to design the course. He also received support from several other Heritage College faculty facilitators, such as Jane Balbo, D.O.; Audrone Biknevicius, Ph.D.; Paige Gutheil Henderson, D.O.; Leah Sheridan, Ph.D.; and Daniel Skinner, Ph.D. The course has been offered to Heritage College students twice, and it will likely be an ongoing opportunity for them.

“When we first started talking about this course, we wanted to develop something that allowed our students to be reflective about professional concepts and apply it to their day-to-day experiences,” Wadsworth said. “Kyle did an amazing job transforming these ideas into a well-designed course that has accomplished our goal.”

A variety of learning materials were used, including academic journal articles, blogs, and YouTube videos, to give students diverse resources that are timely and relevant to their role as a student doctor. Rosenberger said that as they developed the course they hoped students would take what they learned and apply it to their early clinical experiences and beyond.

“The topics of this course also prompted us to focus on asynchronous discussions that would allow medical students, who are early in their careers, to openly discuss their thoughts and experiences with peers. Reflective writing also played a large role in the course as it prompted the students to use higher-order thinking and the ability to articulate their experiences, which they will continue to use throughout their future career as a physician,” he said.

In addition to designing and redesigning courses with Heritage College faculty, Rosenberger is involved with the college’s multimedia productions that raise awareness about important health issues, such as his work on a recent mini-documentary about the opioid crisis.
