‘Profiles in Faculty Achievement’ video features Scripps’ Benjamin Bates

“The study of communication is essential to being able to navigate the interconnected global world that we’re in.”

That’s how Benjamin Bates talks about the field of study at Ohio University that for him has been focused on opportunity – both creating it for the students he teaches and seizing it in moments of collaboration with colleagues.

A professor of communication studies in OHIO’s Scripps College of Communication, Dr. Bates specializes in communication and messaging as they relate to public health and guides his students as they examine the ways in which we communicate and how that communication affects us and influences the decisions we make. His scholarship and passion have benefited his students, whose communication-related skills are sought by employers in a wide variety of industries, and allowed him to connect and work with educators outside of his discipline.

Dr. Bates is the latest OHIO faculty member to be featured in University Communications and Marketing’s “Profiles in Faculty Achievement” video series. Launched in the fall of 2014, the video series is designed to recognize outstanding educators and researchers on all of Ohio University’s campuses while promoting the University’s commitment to academic excellence.

In the video, Dr. Bates reflects on his work in both the School of Communication Studies and OHIO’s Center for International Studies where he serves as a faculty member in the Asian Studies and African Studies programs, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary dialogue.
