Sara L. Trower, J.D., has been appointed executive director of Ohio University’s Office for Equity, Civil Rights Compliance, and Accessibility (ECRCA). Her appointment begins July 1.

The ECRCA executive director oversees and monitors all activities relating to civil rights compliance for all Ohio University constituents on all campuses. While helping to mitigate University risk by ensuring compliance with civil rights laws, the executive director also works to improve the campus climate and culture by ensuring equal access to education and equal opportunity to employment. Formerly known as the Office for Institutional Equity, ECRCA is located in Lindley Hall.

In addition, the executive director will supervise and ensure institutional compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Act campus safety reporting requirements for Athens and all regional and extension campuses.

Trower has served as associate general counsel for the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, since 2003. Before that she was an assistant attorney general in the Office of the Missouri Attorney General for 16 years. She holds a juris doctorate from the University of Missouri and a bachelor’s degree in history and economics from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri.

“The search committee was impressed by the extensive experience Ms. Trower has with issues and legislation related to civil rights compliance,” said Pam Benoit, executive vice president and provost. “I have great confidence in her ability to lead this important office.”
