Student Alena Klimas awarded Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program and an Ohio University student has been awarded a CLS scholarship.

Global Studies and Political Science major Alena Klimas will be taking her talents to Meknes, Morocco, this summer to enhance her skills in Arabic.

The goal of the Critical Language Scholarship program is to broaden the base of American students studying and mastering critical languages while building the relationships between the people of the United States and other countries.

The CLS program provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every language of learning. There are various languages offered for students to explore including: Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Swahili, Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and more.

Klimas stated, “I knew it would be a great step for me to continue learning Arabic, and after the great experience a former Bobcat had a few years ago in Morocco after winning the CLS, it motivated me to pursue this program.”

She is looking forward to improving her Arabic skills while exploring the city of Meknes and its outdoors.

“Since I wish to work in Foreign Service and continue onto a graduate program in Arab Studies,” Klimas says, “this opportunity means I am one step closer to my longer term professional and academic career.”
