Race for a Reason fundraiser kicks off Friday with pre-race concert

Students, faculty, and the local Athens community will once again join together and welcome the OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital Race for a Reason event on Saturday, April 26.

Participants can choose from one of the four signature races:
•   Athletes in Action Triathlon presented by the College of Health Sciences
•   Rocky Military Mud Run powered by Ohio University ROTC
•   OUHCOM 5K Medicine Run presented by Quidel
•   AMVETS 3K Diabetes Walk presented by Humana. Students in the Sports Administration graduate program, led by second-year student Carey Goodman, coordinate this event, with the assistance of Athletes in Action.

Last year more than 900 people participated in the race and helped raise more than $70,000 for more than 40 different charities, non-profits, and student organizations. This year, more than 80 different causes will benefit from the races, which will help achieve the ultimate fundraising goal of $100,000. Race Director Carey Goodman emphasized the power of this event.

"The beauty of this event is that there is no single cause that benefits," Goodman said. "Each person has something they are passionate about and we give them the opportunity to do something with that passion. Everyone can choose the cause their money goes to."

She added that when someone signs up for a race, $10 of the registration fee will automatically be donated to the cause of his or her choice.

This year will feature a new pre-race concert on Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium to kick off the OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital Race for a Reason event. This has been a long-term vision for Bill Hauschild, Race for a Reason director and Athletes in Action campus ministry staff member.

"We are excited to announce two-time Grammy nominated Sanctus Real as the headliner for our concert and we feel like the addition of Parkersburg, W.Va., native Anthony Mossburg as the opening act will bless the community with music that has a meaningful message," Hauschild said. "Even if you cannot participate in the race, Friday night will surely be special as we kick off the OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital Race for a Reason event."

Tickets for race participants are $10 and regular tickets are $15. Limited VIP seats are also available for $25. Call the Ohio University Ticket Office at 740-593-1780 to order your concert tickets or walk up to the ticketing office, located at Memorial Auditorium, which is open Monday through Friday, 1 to 5 p.m.
