Annual Volunteer Events:
Hocking River Sweep
The Hocking River Sweep is an annual volunteer trash clean-up event along the Hocking River within the Athens city limits. This community effort helps protect local waterways that are vital to Ohio University, the City of Athens, and southeast Ohio—supporting clean drinking water, healthy ecosystems, and vibrant communities.
In partnership with the Athens Soil and Water Conservation District, volunteers work in small groups to clean designated sections of the river. Gloves and trash bags are provided, and early registrants receive an event t-shirt. The River Sweep concludes with a free picnic-style lunch, offering a chance to relax, connect, and celebrate a morning of collective impact.
Athens Beautification Month
