Arts, Popular Culture and the Media Track
Asia's complex and widely varied cultures present a rich array of unique regional art forms and performance practices that are studied in this specialty. In contemporary societies, these artistic expressions have been extended and reformed in modern popular cultures and in media representations. Topics within this specialization include subjects such as puppetry of Southeast Asia, Art History of Asia, Modern and Traditional Literature of Southeast Asia, and Comparative Media Systems.

Gender, Ethnicity, and Religion Track
This thematic track examines gender, ethnicity, and religion as critical identity categories that form the basis of modern communities and nation-states in and across Asia, with special attention to how these social institutions intersect and are shaped by historical, political, and economic processes. Topics include: the construction of ethnic and national identities during colonial and post-colonial periods; the meanings and values associated with gender identities and gender differences in various social and political contexts; and how historical changes shape religious traditions across time.

Globalization, Conflict, and Social Change Track
This thematic track examines processes of social and cultural transformations in colonial and post- colonial periods in and across Asia, with special attention to local/global linkages, including attention to the challenges of living in a global world: socioeconomic development, urban expansion, transnational movement and migration, nationalism and pluralism, ethnic conflict, state violence and genocide, community-based social movements, international law, conflict resolution, and other forms of public action for social change.
