"People, Corporations, Economic Decisions, and Political Speech," by Gerhard Barone & Kent Hickman, Atl Econ J (2012) 40:219–220.   The authors argue that the U.S. Supreme Court decision, "Citizens United v. FEC," has aggravated serious problems: "For example, for-profit corporations have no incentive to consider un-priced externalities, like pollution, since fixing pollution is costly and lowers profit. Similar arguments can be made for other market failures, such as monopolies. Even worse, for-profit corporations have a clear incentive to perpetuate market failures in these situations."  They argue that such corporations are obligated to base their expenditure decisions solely on a project’s expected effect on wealth, and that the court's decision empowers such corporations to use their wealth to defeat attempts to take the political action necessary to remedy such market failures.

Falling Oil Price “Changing Whole Dynamic” for Tar Sands (Oil Change International, November 6, 2014)  "CTI [CarbonTracker Initiative] have calculated that a whopping $271 billion could be wasted on the tar sands if oil prices continue to fall. ...  The message to shareholders in the report is blunt: 'We believe shareholders should be concerned at this potential level of expenditure and should consider whether it is prudent to risk such large amounts of capital on high cost projects that need high oil prices to be commercial.'  As if to make the point, profits for the Canadian Oil Sands company plummeted during the third financial quarter of this year by $149 million compared with the same quarter in 2013."
