From 2011-2016, the main aim of the Institute has been to promote well-informed, critical reflection about climate change and economic, social, and environmental sustainability in relation to human rights and justice at local, national, and global levels. In relation to professional ethics, the focus has been mainly on the roles of college and university educators and public officials in a democratic society.

The Institute's guest speakers in recent years have included:
(a) on the topics of climate change and global justice: Stephen M. Gardiner, Dale Jamieson, Naomi Oreskes, Thomas Pogge, and Samuel Scheffler; and
(b) on other topics: William Boyd, David Brink, Samuel Freeman, R. Jay Wallace, Allen W. Wood.

2016:

April 8, 2016, 3-4:45 p.m., Schoonover Auditorium: Climate Change Skepticism and Public Discourse: Naomi Oreskes (Harvard University Professor of the History of Science) gave a public lecture and later take part in a post-film Q&A. She is a co-author (with Erik Conway) of the non-fiction book Merchants of Doubt (2010), which exposes linkages as well as similarities between the controversies about global warming and tobacco smoking, among others. The film "Merchants of Doubt," which was inspired by this book, will be screened on the previous evening (Stocker 103, 6 p.m.) as well as April 8th (Schoonover Auditorium, 7 p.m., followed by Q&A with Professor Oreskes). The public lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with Oreskes and OU professors Alyssa Bernstein, Bernhard Debatin, and Austin Babrow. IAPE Director Alyssa Bernstein initiated and organized these events with help from IAPE Advisory Board members Bernhard Debatin and Austin Babrow.

"Creating Democracy and Challenging Corporate Rule," a public lecture by David Cobb, a lawyer who is the Outreach Director of the organization Move to Amend and one of the authors of the We the People Amendment. March 31, 5 p.m., Scripps 111. This event is co-sponsored by the IAPE.

"The Sustainable Food Movement Rising": March 23, 2016, 7:30 p.m., Baker Ballroom: Frances and Anna Lappé will give a public lecture. Frances Moore Lappé is the author or co-author of 18 books including Diet for a Small Planet. Anna's most recent book is Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It. This event is co-sponsored by IAPE.

2015:

Global Divestment Day (Friday, February 13th, 2015), 2-4 p.m. in the Baker Center Frontroom: A panel discussion about divestment from fossil fuels, with panelists Professor Dan Karney (Energy Economics), Professor Gary Coombs (Business Management), Professor Nancy Manring (Political Science), Loraine McCosker (Environmental Studies) [substituting for Professor Alyssa Bernstein (Philosophy)], and Ohio University Graduate Student Senate President Carl Smith. Initiated by the Environmental Committee of the Ohio University Student Senate, co-organized and sponsored by the IAPE.

2014:

"Oil and Gas Pipelines in Ohio: A Public Forum": November 20, 2014, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, Porter Hall:Topics will include: (a) new proposed pipelines in Ohio, (b) how state and federal agencies regulate pipelines, (c) impacts to landowners, organic farmers, and farmland, (d) eminent domain and landowner rights. Speakers include Nathan Johnson of the Ohio Environmental Council, Ted Auch of FracTracker, and Michael Hollingsworth of Shostak & Hollingsworth Co., LPA. This event, which is co-organized by Alyssa Bernstein, Director of the IAPE, and Amalie Lipstreu of the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA), with help from Christine Hughes, an owner of local food businesses.

(*) Vote Suppression, Democratic Values, and Struggles for Voting Rights: September 17th, 2014 (Constitution Day): Panel including Daniel Tokaji (Professor of Law and Senior Fellow with Election Law @ Moritz, Ohio State University), Piers Turner (Assistant Professor of Philosophy and co-leader of the Democratic Governance group of the Ohio State University Center for Ethics and Human Values) and Patricia Gunn (Associate Professor of Law at Ohio University's Department of African American Studies). Three lectures of 20-30 minutes each, followed by open discussion. Organized by Professor Alyssa Bernstein, Director of the OU Institute for Applied and Professional Ethics, and co-sponsored by OU's Philosophy Department and the OU Center for Law, Justice, and Culture. Ethics for Earth: Climate Change and Water (continuing series) -- Showing and discussion of documentary film "Disruption" (2014) -- twice on September 7, 2014.

(*) Fracking, Climate Change, and Resistance: A discussion among William Boyd, Richard McGinn, Christine Hughes, and Alyssa Bernstein -- Panel discussion (local-access TV broadcast) about fracking (high-pressure hydraulic fracturing of shale to obtain natural gas or oil), its relation to climate change, and the reasons why some citizens in Ohio and Colorado are resisting, by legal or political means, the industry's harmful impacts on their communities. -- April 11, 2014.
