Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies is often called a completion degree because students complete the college work they have already started. Students are eligible to declare the BTAS major after completing 60 semester credits from an accredited university or college and obtaining a 2.0 grade point average. As with all OHIO degrees 120 hours are required for a bachelor’s degree.  =The BTAS will take all previous credits, which means students are at least halfway or more to completing a bachelor's degree when they declare the major.

The "technical" in the Technical and Applied Studies major means the program of study is focused on more than general education. Applied means that students learn more than just theory. The practical application of knowledge in the workplace is emphasized. Students who are currently working are often able to immediately apply what they learn in class each week to their jobs. In fact, they may recommend the books they read as part of classes to their coworkers and bosses.

Degree Requirements

The BTAS major requires 30 credits. There is a 15 credit core set of courses and then students choose an additional 15 credits in an academic plan with the faculty. BTAS also offers several elective courses to help satisfy the 120 credits required for a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, the BTAS requires:

• Completion of all TAS courses with a  “C” or better
• A minimum of a 2.0 GPA both overall and in the 30 credit major
• 30 credits at the upper division (3000-4000) level
• 50% of the major must be completed through Ohio University
• Completion of Ohio University’s general education requirements

Elective hours may be required to reach 120 hours. The BTAS curriculum is available in the Ohio University Undergraduate Catalog.

• TAS 4110 - Leadership and Workplace Effectiveness
• TAS 4440 - Collaboration in the Workplace
• TAS 4510 - Capstone Experience in Evidence-Based Practice

Online Degree Option

The BTAS is offered asynchronously online. There are no set required times that students must meet. This flexibility affords students time to fit collegiate work into their everyday lives and careers.. Learn More About OHIO Online

Admission Requirements

To apply to the BTAS program, students must have completed an associate degree or 60 semester hours of college credit and have a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher.

If you are not currently enrolled at Ohio University, you will need to complete an application for admission through Undergraduate Admissions or through a student services office at one of the regional campuses.

Freshman/First-Year Admission

You are a freshman if you are in high school or you have graduated but haven't been enrolled at a college or university since completing high school.

Completion of an associate degree or 60 semester hours of college credit is required to qualify for admission to the BTAS program. If you have not earned an associate degree or completed 60 semester hours of college credit, you must first enroll in and complete an associate degree in a technical field or complete 60 semester hours of college credit. Freshman applicants are encouraged to complete an online application for enrollment.

External Transfer Admission

You are a transfer student if you have completed 9 semester hours or more (12 quarter hours) at another institution after you graduated from high school. If you have completed fewer than 9 semester hours, you will apply as a freshman applicant. Transfer applicants are encouraged to complete an online application for enrollment.

Students must have 60 semester hours of college credit or a completed associate degree. Ohio University recognizes several kinds of transferable credits, including those from other institutions and exam credits. Learn more about transferring your credits to OHIO.

Internal Transfer Students

Current OHIO students who wish to transfer into the BTAS program must:

• Achieve a 2.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA)
• Earn an associate degree in a technical field or have completed 60 semester hours of college credit
• Declare the BTAS major via the Degree Program Application Form. The application form is available in person at the University College office, located at 140 Chubb Hall, or at any regional campus student services office. You may also fill out the form online.
