Lately, life has been interesting and culturally shocking. I'm currently living and teaching in Shaoxing, China. Shaoxing is a small city by China standards (less than a million people) but it's really pretty, and only about three hours from Shanghai. It's also the home of rice wine and stinky tofu - quite a place! My job is, ironically, teaching Business English to first-year university students. Recently I found myself giving them a GLC-style assignment... it's strange how things change and yet, stay the same. Although they are often shy, when they open up they are very friendly and eager to learn English. Hopefully they won't take my job when I go home! But honestly, I wouldn't have a job here if the GLC hadn't put a bunch of crazy ideas in my head. I think that those experiences gave me the confidence to be completely lost, to bumble around like an idiot, to live in a foreign culture, and to learn more than I could in most other jobs. So anyway, Shaoxing is still no Athens! I look forward to visiting home. If anyone is in the Shanghai area - send me an e-mail. I love reading/hearing fluent English!
