When I graduated from Ohio University I decided to join AmeriCorps and I was placed with an organization that provides services to immigrants/migrants of Northwest Ohio. As an AmeriCorps member I was able to engage in the broader immigration debate. As a result, I have joined the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (www.cirnow.org) based in Washington DC. The Coalition is a campaign that pushes congress to pass comprehensive immigration legislation this year. I am a regional field organizer, so I am basically the link between community based organizations and the larger movement in Washington. I have seen first-hand how a single piece of legislation can transform the lives of a group of people. My parents were able to legalize through the Amnesty Act of 1986. I have also seen how the lack of a comprehensive bill has created an underclass that hasn't been as fortunate. I am excited about the opportunity to engage in the legslative process in hope of producing positive social policy that will affect the lives of millions of people and shape the future of our country.
