CAMPUS EXPERIENCE

University Life

Life on the Ohio University Athens Campus provides you with top-rate resources that can help you excel in your studies. You’ll have easy access to your classes and Alden Library, as well as the University’s many labs and resource centers. Honors Academy staff live in the building, and they will be available to assist and supervise students at night, in addition to assistance from mentors throughout the day.

Live in a Residence Hall

If your family does not live in the immediate area (within 50 miles of Athens), you will live in a residence hall designated for high school students participating in various summer programs. If your permanent address is within 50 miles of campus, you may commute (be sure to indicate on your application form whether you intend to commute or live on campus).

You will move into the residence hall on Sunday, June 30, 2013. More information about the residence hall and move-in will be available on the online orientation page in early May.

Honors Academy students will live in Johnson Hall, #47 on the campus map. For a detailed description of Johnson Hall, click HERE.

Air conditioned residence hall rooms are furnished with beds, desks and chairs, dressers, and closet space. Linen is included. Rooms are double occupancy, and include a combination compact refrigerator/freezer and microwave.

Each room has an ethernet/network jack and cable connectivity. Students must bring a co-axial cable and ethernet cable. You'll receive your e-mail password on the first day of class. Telephones and personal items (such as alarm clocks) are not provided.

Honors Academy staff will live in the hall with the students, and they will be available to supervise and assist students during the night.

Housing and Dining Fees for 5 weeks: $1,704.75 (double room, 20 meals/week). This price includes linens, which consist of 2 flat sheets, 1 pillowcase, 1 blanket, 1 pillow, 1 body towel, 1 hand towel and 1 washcloth.

Meal Options in Residence Dining Halls

We pack each meal with as many options as possible. Whatever you’re craving, you’ll probably find it at our dining hall. With more than 100 selections each day in unlimited portions, the dining hall options include fast food, deli, pasta and salad bars, and wok, potato, and waffle bars). You will receive the 20 meals-per-week option, which will provide a pre-loaded swipe card redeemable for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day, up to a total of 100 meals.

2013 Honors Academy students will be served in Shively Dining Hall, #54 on the campus map.

While the meal plan will cover the majority of students' meals on campus, we recommend that students bring $50 - $100 pocket money to cover snacks and meals during weekend day trips.

Commuter students will be responsible for their own meals or may opt to purchase the 20-meal plan separately for $676.25. Please indicate on the application form whether you wish to commute, and if so, whether you wish to purchase the meal plan.

Honors Academy Mentors

Honors Academy mentors will coordinate social and cultural activities such as dances, sports, movies, and discussion groups, providing full supervision and guidance, as well as advice about how to make the most of your college years.

You will be offered a combination of required and optional activities, and the mentors can be counted on to help you schedule activities and to be good sources of information and advice. The mentors are selected from our Honors Tutorial College and other high-achieving University students for their organizational skills and experience as group members and leaders.

As Ohio University students, the mentors may know your professors or may have taken the same courses you’re taking. They will share their college experiences with you and may have suggestions about choosing a college and major. Most importantly, they will work hard to ensure that all aspects of your experience in Honors Academy are positive.

Extracurricular Activities

We’re planning a full schedule of cultural, intellectual, athletic, and just plain fun activities for you. You may enjoy theater presentations; recreational and intramural sports; hikes at regional parks; dances and karaoke nights; bowling; free movies every Monday and Thursday evening; several outdoor concerts; picnics; and much more. After all, college life isn’t just about studying!

In addition, you’ll have access to a variety of athletic facilities on campus, including indoor and outdoor tennis courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool with sun deck, a golf course and driving range, and the Ping Center which houses basketball, racquetball, and multipurpose courts, weight, aerobic, and fitness rooms, an indoor track, climbing wall, and game room. Surrounding the campus there is also a lighted bike path which extends beyond Athens for approximately 20 miles.
