Intended to enrich the Cutler Scholar's understanding of self, to provide insight into civic responsibility and the free enterprise system, and to offer meaningful exposure to another culture, planned enrichment experiences are an integral part of the Cutler Scholars Program. The program provides four distinct experiences in self discovery, volunteer service, business management, and international experience.  Experiences of a Lifetime (9.31MB Quicktime Movie)

The four planned experiences, in the order of their normal occurrence, include:

Outward Bound

  • An experience in self-discovery in an outdoor leadership program such as Outward Bound (summer prior to the University freshman year). Scholars have chosen and experienced sailing in Chesapeake Bay and the Florida Keys; whitewater rafting, backpacking, canyoning, and mountaineering in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, and Montana; climbing and sailing in Maine; and camping, kayaking, and learning survival skills in Alaska.

According to a recent article in The New York Times, OUTWARD BOUND has its roots in wartime.

In the early months of World War II, as German U-boats were sinking naval and merchant ships in the Atlantic, Lawrence Holt, a British shipping executive, resolved to improve the dismal survival rate of young seamen left to struggle in the ocean after the attacks.

He saw a possible solution in the teachings of Kurt Hahn, the founder of Gordonstoun, a Scottish school where Mr. Holt's son was a student.

Mr Holt reasoned that the physical and psychological skills that Mr. Hahn was teaching could also help the young seament.  Though the young men had formal training in seamanship, they seemed to lack a sense of self-reliance and camaraderie -- qualities that often steeled older sailors in a crisis.

With money from Mr. Holt, Mr. Hahn opened an academy in Aberdovey, Wales, in 1941. At Mr. Holt's insistence, they called it Outward Bound, a nautical term used when a ship leaves port.  Originally, the course lasted 28 days and included small-boat training, orienteering and community service.

Community/Public Service

  • community/public service experience (the summer between the freshman and sophomore years). Organizations with which Scholars have volunteered include Biosphere Expeditions in the Amazon; Cross-Cultural Solutions in Tanzania; Habitat for Humanity; Kids on Campus in Athens; the Appalachian Trail in Vermont; the Navajo Health Foundation/Sage Memorial Hospital in Ganado, Arizona, and Discovery Program in Ireland.

Business Management Internship

  • A business management internship (the summer between the sophomore and junior years). Scholars are encouraged to intern in management positions related to their career goals; for example, a prospective doctor might work in the administrative offices of a hospital to gain insight into the business side of medicine. Scholars have interned with the Nuclear Cardiac Imaging Division of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles; Diagnostic Hybrids in Athens, Italy, and France; Make-A-Wish Foundation in Las Vegas; The American Forum in Washington, D.C.; and Plastic Card Systems in Northboro, Massachusetts.

Work/Study Abroad

  • work/study abroad experience (summer between the junior and senior years or during the academic year); offered to those who successfully completed the two previous experiences.

A proposal for work/study abroad must reflect the Scholar's previous interest in either the subject of study of the travel area, or both. Examples of work/study abroad experiences include studying sociology, history, and economics at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey; taking classes in German language, culture, and literature in Salzburg, Austria; taking part in the criminal justice program at the Waterford Institute of Technology in Waterford, Ireland; working in the Multi-Corporate Division of the Korea Exchange Bank; studying language in Merida, Mexico; studying international environmental politics at the University of Stirling in Scotland; and studying architecture history, European urbanism and Italian in Florence, Italy.
