June 10, 2019 : Library Director Launches Her Children's Book Nationwide

by Kellie Crawford

judycnWhat Daddies Like, written by Judy Carey Nevin, director of the Hannah V. McCauley Library, would make a perfect gift for this upcoming Father’s Day. What Daddies Like details the adventures of a father bear and his cub spending an entire day together full of fun and love. School Library Journal praised the story, saying “this is a charming book about a father bear and his cub spending a fun-filled day together. Young listeners will enjoy this delightful tale. It’s perfect for one-on-one sharing.”

Judy also has periodic book signing events around central Ohio. During these signings, fans can meet Judy and enjoy a special reading of her stories. Her next signing event will be Saturday, June 15, the day before Father’s Day, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Cover to Cover Books for Young Readers (2116 Arlington Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43221). She will be reading What Daddies Like and All Kids Are Good Kids, an original board book. She will also be signing copies of her books following story time. Stickers and bookmarks will be available for audience members. Be sure to check out Judy’s website,, to stay up to date on her future book signings and events throughout the summer.

Carey Nevin and her husband started reading picture books to their daughter when she was an infant. While finding books to share with her daughter, she noticed how few books depicted dads and their little ones; the idea for What Daddies Like was born. She wanted to create a story that conveyed how dads are just as loving and supportive as the moms depicted in the majority of children’s books available for new parents. “It’s just like dads don’t exist and that’s really sad,” she said. So it is no wonder that Judy decided to focus her first children’s book on the bond between a father and his child.

Judy shared how she was pleasantly surprised by how well the book’s illustrator, Stephanie Six, interpreted her words and made her story come alive through her artwork. Reading the words with the illustrations for the first time was almost like reading a new story to Judy. “I wrote the text; Stephanie Six created the visual story which includes its own mini-stories,” she said. The illustrator even hid a stuffed bunny on every page of What Daddies Like for a reader challenge, which gives young readers something to look for as they listen to the story.

Judy has ample experience in the book publishing world. Before coming to Ohio with her husband, she was an editor at Viking Children’s Books, where she specialized in picture books and easy-to-read books. She likes to gear her stories towards emerging readers in preschool and younger. “It makes me so happy to think of new parents reading my books to their babies,” said Carey Nevin.  “I wrote them for just that purpose and it’s a thrill to think it’s really happening.”

What Daddies Like and What Mommies Like are in Target stores across the country. What Daddies Like, What Mommies Like and Carey Nevin’s latest book, All Kids Are Good Kids, can be bought online at Indie Bound, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.
