Ohio University Eastern student Samantha Seevers, of Quaker City, was among seven OHIO Regional Higher Education students to receive the 2021 Outstanding Female Student Leader Award during the 15th Annual Celebrate Women virtual conference on Friday, March 19, 2021.
To be eligible for the award, nominees must have a GPA of at least 3.0, be viewed as a leader and excel in service to the community.
Seevers is a Specialized Studies Major at OHIO Eastern. She serves as the Editor of the Eastern Zeitgeist literary magazine and contributing writer. Seevers, also maintains an exceptionally high GPA and is on track to graduate this spring with Summa Cum Laude honors.
Jennifer Kellner-Muscar, Manager for Advising and Retention for the Eastern campus, nominated Seevers for the award stating, “Samantha is an incredibly talented and driven student. She is an enthusiastic learner who exhibits strong self-motivation. During her time at Ohio University Samantha has consistently sought out new challenges and met each with intelligence and an incredibly strong work ethic. I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes as an OHIO alum.”
2021 Celebrate Women Speaker and Ohio University Eastern Associate Professor of English Dr. Pamela B. June cited some of Seevers’ award-winning attributes.
“Samantha possesses an innate drive to learn, an ability to think deeply and critically, and an outstanding academic record. She brings a positive attitude to every class and consistently sets a high standard. Her peers respect her and enjoy being in class with her, as she is a model for approaching every challenge with an indomitable spirit and a smile. What a treat it has been to have Samantha in class. I have no doubt she will continue to be successful.”
In fall of 2020, Samantha participated in a COIL Project (Collaborative Online International Learning) through her Cross-Cultural Communication course. During this course, students from OHIO communicated with students from two international universities: University de Autonoma de Chihuahua in Mexico, and Tianjin Normal University in China with weekly video calls. Students discussed different aspects of cultures, such as student life within and outside of college, as well as the impact that COVID-19 had on their cultures and lives. Samantha also participated in OHIO International Education week by creating a video about the COIL project where she discussed the importance and benefits of being open to and actively learning about other cultures.
Samantha is currently working as a writing tutor for Ohio University and as has an internship as an Editorial Assistant-at-Large for Picture This Post online magazine which she began in spring semester 2021.
